Group Therapy 101

When one is going through any type of mental healing, a group environment can be one of the most beneficial ways to foster a better recovery. Those who have utilized group therapy often report that going though the process of healing with others can help make them reflect on their struggles from a new perspective. During group sessions, people in the group can lift each other up and help one another make progress, hold each other accountable and remind each other of their goals.  Group therapy environments allow for vulnerability, self-awareness and support in a safe environment where you can learn, share and grow. Some people lack a natural support group in their life. A new support system born out of group therapy can bring a level of accountability to the lives of group members.

Group therapy can be a hugely beneficial practice. When you are dealing with complex life events or mental health struggles, therapy is a proven way to help. Kaniksu Community Health offers the following group therapy classes:

Wellness Group
An introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an evidence based approach to reaching symptoms of depression and anxiety. Group members will develop and understanding of factors that contribute to depression and anxiety. The group will help members start to improve self-care, increase mindfulness, and challenge negative thoughts that get in the way of feeling better

DBT Group
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps people learn to manage their emotions and improve their relationships. It's based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and also incorporates mindfulness as a foundational component. DBT has become a major therapeutic modality and has a wealth of academic research showing its effectiveness. The DBT group will focus on skills building and relation practice in the group setting. Participants are encouraged to do homework and track their individual progress throughout the week.

PTSD Group
This group is for individuals diagnosed with PTSD and who are struggling with PTSD symptoms. Together client's can learn various skills to help them to reduce symptoms and begin their journey to healing. Clients can learn and practice skills together with the support of others who understand and the therapists leading the group. Skills include learning how to cope, identifying triggers, identifying and working to change intrusive thoughts, better understanding trauma and trauma symptoms, symptom management, and more. Content is based on various researched based models for working with PTSD specifically.

Love & Logic Class
For the last 47 years, Love and Logic has been a research driven, whole child philosophy that teaches practical tools and techniques to help foster respectful and healthy relationships between adults and their children. The class runs for seven weeks and space is limited. Weekly attendance is required. A one hour intake appointment is required prior to attending the first class.
